The Right to Exist in Our Natural State

Support ASL in the Deaf Community! March 18, 2008

I was touched when my friend, Shannon Murray, wrote about us on her website. I met Shannon in Jeh Free Spirit’s Yoga class at the “YogaTree” in San Francisco, CA. In this same class, I, also, met Adam Lovelace who grew up in the oral education system. Adam has, recently, discovered his hunger and thirst for his own Deaf culture, history, community and ASL! This, also, is how “Deaf Yoga” at the Mission Yoga Studio came to be! (http://www.missionyoga.com/)

Here is an excerpt of Shannon’s blog:
“I recently decided to study American Sign Language. My roommate is hard of hearing and for a number of other reasons, we all as a group decided to become bilingual. We have met an amazing woman named K10 who is our teacher and ambassador into the Deaf world and into Deaf culture. American Sign Language is an amazing heart-centered, artistic language. Learning it is an enjoyable experience but learning about Deaf culture and more importantly Deaf history has been eye-opening.”

For more of Shannon’s wonderful blog on us, please go to this website. http://greenpride.typepad.com/greenpride_celebrating_be/2008/03/support-asl-in.html

Thank you Shannon! It is incredible when we find wonderful allies in the most unexpected places!

Yours for DBC CA!
